Djilang Alliance – Waurn Ponds Upgrade

Scope of Works:
2Survey successfully delivered comprehensive engineering surveying services for the Waurn Ponds Upgrade as part of the Djilang Alliance works. The survey scope extended from Breakwater Bridge through to South Geelong Station, covering all critical phases of the project.

  • Supported a 78-day rail occupation, providing 24/7 survey coverage and coordination.

Our scope included construction set-out, control establishment, as-built verification, volume reporting, and ongoing support for earthworks, drainage, and structural packages.

Overview:

2Survey was engaged to deliver full engineering surveying services for the Mt Derrimut Road Level Crossing Removal project, a key initiative under the Western Program Alliance. Our scope covered all phases of the project, from early works through to construction and commissioning, across complex rail, road, and structural packages.

Scope of Works:

    • Establishment and maintenance of a robust primary and secondary control network.
    • Survey set-out and QA for major structural elements, including:
      • Super U-Trough Viaduct construction
      • Super T bridge span construction
      • Steel girder bridge installation
    • Set-out and verification of rail alignments, platform structures, service relocations, and civil works.
    • Real-time survey support during critical rail occupations and shutdowns.
    • Detailed as-built data capture and reporting to support design validation and project handover.
    • Digital engineering deliverables prepared using 12d Model and Trimble workflows.

    Challenges & Solutions:

    • Multiple bridge types and interfaces: Accurate geometry and clear communication were critical in coordinating U-trough, Super T, and steel girder placements across various zones.
    • Tight rail possession windows: High-precision, time-sensitive survey support was provided 24/7, with contingency planning to mitigate delays.
    • Design and field alignment updates: Our team worked dynamically with engineering and construction leads to accommodate frequent design revisions without impacting progress.

    • All bridge structures, including the Super U-Trough viaduct, Super T spans, and steel girders, were installed with minimal tolerance adjustments and no survey-related rework.
